Diseases / gill flukes from live brine shrimp/blackworms?
I've read some about being careful about feeding live foods like live brine shrimp and blackworms because they can spread disease.
Does anyone have reputable links or information regarding the true risks? Has anyone here had any issues first-hand? My fish love live brine and live blackworms but I won't feed them if there's a risk. I can stick with frozen and prepared if it's safer.
Most fish diseases are not likely to exist unless fish are present, and the live foods are not cultured in fish tanks. There used to be concern over tubifex worms, about the pathogens and bacteria that could be present due to the stagnant water. I never worried about this, but that doesn't mean it might not be a valid concern for such foods. I suspect the live foods you mentinoed are OK. Shrimp certainly would be due to the method of culture.
