African Cichlids

I am looking into making my 75 gallon tank into an AF cichlid tank. When I first got my tank it was a cichid tank but it didn't go to well. I had roughly 10 plants and 10 different caves. I had roughly 10 cichlids that were 3-4 inches. After 3 days from when I bought them, one killed all of them. I believe it was an electric blue ahli. I would like to do an all male tank if it's possible with such a small tank. Is it better to have a lot of plants and no caves? Or plants with a lot of caves? Last time I had a cave for each fish...

ROCKS, ROCKS and more ROCKS, very few plants for Lake Malawi cichlids. Anubias and Java fern work but be warned the fish can and usually will eat them. Lake Malawi is a naturally rocky sandy Lake and as such you would aim to mimic that in the home aquarium.

An all male in a 75g, is absolutely ok, BE WARNED though when setting up an all male tank, you MUST MUST MUST have a spare tank cycled and ready to go at a moments notice. All male is a challenge and as such NOT all fish are compatible.

Your general aim would be for 12-15 fish, NOTHING similar in color and ABSOLUTELY NO doubles of anything, they will fight.

Look at the all Male Peacocks that will give you the most color with perhaps 1 large Hap as a show piece fish.

It might work, keep an eye on them and be prepared to remove on if it is showing too much aggression towards the other.

I can offer an excellent site for purchasing cichlids which are of excellent quality if you want. PM me and I will send it you as I am not sure it would be appropriate to post the link in the forums.

Ok i will do that. theyve been in there for like 8 hours and none are.really aggressive yet. in the past ive had some that fought immediately
