How many plants before CO2
I have a 75 gallon tank. I just bought 5 plants. The pet store told me they didn't require much light.
(I'll post what kind of plants and pictures when I get home)
I've been reading on plants and CO2 equipment all morning.
I was wondering how many plants can I get away with before needing a CO2 solution?
I have no idea what type of light I have, I realize I might need a new one. I also realize that you probably want to know more about the light. I'll try to get that info when I get home.
All the tank info I have is in my aquarium log.
CO2 is not a matter of the number of plants you have but is needed more often with higher light. Any and all plants, regardless of how many you have, will benefit from CO2 so if you can set it up then go for it.
The only time CO2 becomes "required" is when you go over medium light. At levls above that you need it to help stave off algae and so the plants don't use it all up because of the light levels. It will help with plant growth at any light levels and some plant experts even say that it is more important than increasing lighting.
Alright, I want a medium light.
I have a 75 Gallon tank, 4' wide.
What kind of bulb should I look for?
Compact flourescent with a bank of lights on each side. 2-4 bulbs each side. 100-150 total watts of lighting. This actually will put you at between 135-202 watts of lighting. Compact Flourescent lighting is about 35% stronger than normal output flourescents.
An easy way would be to get two shop light fixtures and use 4 bulbs in them. That would give you 160 watts of lighting and you could keep the light up to 12-18 inches above the tank. Either that or a 48 inch flourescent fixture that takes 4 bulbs.
Any bulb that is called a aquatic plant gro bulb or is rated at 6500 Kelvin or higher will work fine. The more variety the better IMHO.
