2nd time around German Ram fry - video!!

Okay, here's day one as "free swimmers". I've fed them today, live brine and it seems they are eating it - darting around, very active. Here's the link below to the video.

I kept it short, because the "father" came up and gave me a dirty look. I'm trying not to cause them any stress, so they don't eat the fry:shock:

Very nice Gwen! Hopefully the parents don't eat them this time around.

That was fast.
Hopefully they'll be better parents this time.

Thanks guys! It sure was fast. I was really hoping they'd wait awhile.
It's possible they'll eat these fry, I guess, but I think the first time around was my fault, because I didn't know they needed "live" food. This time, I'm on it. Time will tell.

I have to find a way to keep them from breeding however. I really can't manage the work this will take. At some point, I'll have to move them to a seperate tank, and with that many in a tank, it will be frequent water changes, and lots of hauling purchased RO water. Ugh!

I may have to start adding tap water to the mix, to lower the ph, as this low ph keeps them thinking about spawning, I guess :-?

I've been on a 2 week break from work, and I'm back to work on Monday. My entire break has been watching fry come and go.

update

Well, they are still alive :-D Parents take them out to one part of the tank by mid day, and I saw a few nibbling at a moss ball. In the evening, when lights go out, they move them to the back corner of the tank. I've been feeding live brine, but killed all of my second batch - this is a learning curve! So, hoping my next batch will hatch tonight, so I can feed them before I go off to work. I've fed them the frozen bbs, but I can't tell if they are eating it or not. The parents nip like crazy at the syringe I put near them to feed them. I guess they still haven't figured out I'm trying to feed their young, since I don't think they are capable. LOL!

If they are still around tomorrow, than they've made it past the time the first fry lived, before they were eaten.

Next on the agenda is finding a cheap 20 gal long tank, to one day put the fry in, or use a 30 gal I have sitting around. It's more tall than long, which I don't like, but it's already here :)

A tank in the closet is worth 2 on Craigslist :P

update

The fry are gone again. I'm just not sure if they are not surviving, and than being eaten, or if the parents are just eating them. I'm fine with it, because I'm realizing how much work it is to even raise fry. I just bought a bunch of baby brine shrimp eggs online, which has now arrived and is sitting here.

I guess someday, "we'll' try again :-D
