Nope. It's not necessary besides unless you have plants, the energy consumed for nothing is just a waste.:mrgreen:

Well during the cycle don't you need some light for the bacteria to grow??

The bacteria derive their energy from the ammonia and the nitrites they are converting. It is their food.

i like to look at the tank even though nothing is in it...... it isnt a must.....
