Best method in cleaning a new USED tank
Just received the 125 gal I have been speaking with everyone about. It needs a lot of cleaning. What is the best way to clean the inside, and on the outside, tape residue?
Found some aquarium cleaning supplies at local pet stores, but I have been reading alot about water and vinegar?
Also, are there cheap and easy DIY for a Vacuum system?
Yes, a 50/50 mixture of vinegar & water will make for a good glass cleaner. If you are looking to get tape off the outside of the tank ... well, you can really use anything as long as you are absolutely certain to not get any inside (so spray/aerosol cleaners are not recommended). Try a razor blade first, see if you can scrap it off.
IMO you can use anything as long as it doesn't harm the glass or seals. Just make sure you rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, and rinse a few more times......
I use vinegar if its not bad, I use straight vinegar and a sponge. If a tank has major hard water build up then I break out the CLR. You can lay the tank on its side and get 1" or so of standing water in it then add CLR and let it sit like that. Repeat for each side.
Main thing is to know what your cleaners active ingredient is. CLR is a bunch of acids, vinegar is more diluted acids. Rinsing is enough to get rid of either one and not have to worry about residues.
When I got my 55G it was in ROUGH shape. I used the vinegar trick. At one point i had to put the tank on its side, saturate paper towels and let it sit over the area over night. Lots of elbow grease and a razor blade got about 80% of it cleaned up. I rinsed rinsed rinsed then filled the tank. After the tank was filled, and as i was letting it sycle i was able to get most of the rest off, after is under water for a couple days.
A tank i had a couple years ago I filled and let sit with a water/vinegar mix for a few days then scrubbed and rinsed rinsed rinsed!!!
