Acrylic tank showing cracks...or not ???
My 12 gallon eclipse acrylic bow-front looks like it has crack marks! The marks are on the bottom right and along the sides. They don't go all the way through, and if I run my nail over them they feel like a scratch, but they don't look like a scratch. The marks seem to be feathering, much like a cracked window will do.
Has anyone ever seen this before? What the heck?
Pictures? Bit hard to imagine how the cracks look.
If the cracks are beginning to spider web, I'd suggest coming up with a new tank asap.
Post pics, it will be easier to tell.
I'll see what I can do as far as a photo soon. The odd thing is, they don't go all the way through. I can't feel the supposed crack form the inside. The marks have been there for a few months and at first I thought my kids has scratched the tank, but now they are appearig all over the place and not where the kids would be touching the tank. Also worth a mention my kids are 8 and 6, not toddlers being nutty...
I might email Marineland and see what they say too. I'll be pretty annoyed if this is a stress-crack sort of situation.
If I were to get a new tank, and transfer the biowheel and the substrate, etc, will this be ok for the fish? I'm assuming yes.
Is the tank close to a heat source at all, perhaps a radiator? Apparently heat can cause crazing cracks in acrylic, which will eventually become deeper with time. This may well not be the cause, but was the only information I could find.
No, no heat source. It's in the kitchen, off to the side. I'm going to contact Marineland- I read on a review that someone else had an acrylic tank that started to crack just like mine is, for the next month it's less than a year old... I will be interested in hearing what they say.
Any direct sunlight in the locations where it is cracking?
