Clown Loach Breeding

I heard that when wanting to breed loaches, you must extract semen from the male and inject it into the females. Is this true??

NO that's not how it's done, but it does involve injections.

You need to inject the fish with hormones (which are readily available from aquaculturalists) to get them ready. Once this is done the females will become fatter than the males. Select a pair then squeeze/"milk" the eggs into a net/strainer (which is suspended just below the water's surface) and then "milk" the male's milt over the eggs. Be very carful as squeezing/"milking" wrong will cause the cloaca to express poop instead of eggs. Then place an airstone/bubbler under the net/strainer to aggitate the eggs entil they hatch....now you're getting somewhere.

There is 1 recorded "natural" spawning of clown loaches in captivity and this was in England some 5 (or so) years ago, I will seek out a paper on this for you.

It might be worth your noting that clown loaches are a long lived fish (about 40 years or so) and don't sexually mature till about the age of 7 or 8, so you will also have to make sure the fish are old enough.

Hope this helps....best of luck if you plan to try.
