cleaning filter basket
I have a 30 gallon fresh water tank. I read somewhere that when you change the filter cartridge, you should not clean the basket that it fits in. It said the basket has special stuff on it that the aquarium needs. However, my basket is getting really nasty with slimy brown stuff on it and when you touch it, it gets in the water. Should I EVER clean it, at least a little?
What is the make and model of your filter?
ok, thank you.
I would suggest not cleaning the inside of the filter but clean the weir output (part where the water flows out from), probably best you do this will just a damp cloth. Cleaning the inside unless it is constantly getting into your tank, would perhaps disrupt the nitrogen cycle and cause a mini cycle.
I wouldn't be afraid to clean the inside of a filter or filter basket - the majority of beneficial bacteria is in the filter cartridge.
That being said, keep your cartridge wet and rinse in tank or conditioned water. Use it as long as possible before replacing.
That is helpful and interesting. I thought I was supposed to change the filter every four to six weeks. I have been changing every four weeks because it is so dirty. Thanks.
