Sand or Gravel for Peacocks
Hey guys. This is my first post on this forum and was wondering if you guys could lend me a hand. I have a 65g tank that's about 40in in length. I plan on putting in all peacocks or whatever I can put in it with peacocks. I haven't decided if I'm going to do all male or not. What y'all opinion on that? Also, I haven't gotten any sand or gravel yet and was wondering what would be better for them. The lfs I go to here has a tank with an assortment of peacocks. They range is many different colors/patterns. Let me know what y'all think. Thanks
Welcome to the forum first of all.
Sand would be the preferred substrate as that is what Lake Malawi is...pool filter sand works very well and is very cheap, just remember to rinse it very very well.
With regards to doing an all male tank, I have a 180g all male tank and it is a lot of work. It is stable now but when I first set it up, I had several tanks cycled and ready to remove fish that simply were not working out.
It is by far the most colorful tank you will get but it will be an absolute MUST to have spare tanks cycled and ready.
If you do not go all male, then you want 1 Male to 3 female with a maximum of 12 fish. If the tank was 4ft long then you could add up to 16 fish. If you buy juveniles then you would be looking to get at least 8 of each. Once the males color up (only male peacocks color up), then you can remove fish to get the correct male-female ratio.
You would also need a filter(s) turning over 10-15 times your tank volume per hour. Decorations would be a lot of rock work and plenty of places for the fish to hide out.
Consider adding in 2-3 BristleNose plecos or synodontis multipunctus as bottom feeders.
i will probably be trying to do all male tank. but, i will be buying all my fish as juveniles. Lots cheaper that way. so I wont know if they are male or female until they get older. then, ill have to go back and trade the females in for males.
