1st Water Test

Ph 7.2
KH 80
GH 300
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20

Let me know what everything thinks. I also took the water to Petsmart and they tested it and said it was ok, but never told me the numbers.

hi
i'm not up on gh,and kh, however..........
nitrite is great,nitrate isn't bad either,and PH is ok too,
you really need Amonia test aswell though.

Looks good, except for what willow mentioned. Your results are lacking an ammonia testing.

Your GH suggests you have fairly hard water, and your KH suggests your tank had an adequate buffering capacity, so you probably won't see too many swings in pH.; and 7.2 is great.

How long has the tank been set up?

tiffianylynn 11-14-2007 12:09 PM

Hi I sat the tank up this past Saturday evening. So 4 days so far.

JouteiMike 11-14-2007 12:37 PM

Wow, 4 days and you're already showing signs of nitrates? Did you do anything special to speed up the cycling process when setting up this tank? Like add matured filter media, other aquarium water...gravel...ect?

tiffianylynn 11-14-2007 12:44 PM

I purchased the tank used, so I never took the gravel out, I used her existing gravel as is. Because I was told it was healthier for the fish. I added dechlorantor, and stress coat, which the stress coat has dechlorator also. But I added it twice just to make sure chroline was gone. I purchased new filters, no old water all fresh.

Cool. The old gravel seemed to do you well. That's how I bought my last tank...used with all the old gravel still in there and I had a very quick cycle. Do you plan on getting a liquid ammonia tester soon?

tiffianylynn 11-14-2007 04:41 PM

As soon as I get the funds I will get one. It broke me buying this tank. By the weekend I know for sure I will have one.

Is it normal for tap water to have ammonia in it? I tested my new tank yesterday, and it showed the following:

PH = 8.0
GH = 20
KH = 13
NO2 = <0.3 mg/l
NH3/4 = 1.0 mg/l

I was surprised to see that much ammonia in it. Should I wait to add starter fish?
