Shy Platys

hello all, i have gotten a community tank started and have some concerns about my platys. they are very shy and rarely come out to be seen unless they are being fed. even then, they are pretty cautious. the tank is 40g and heavily planted. i have 5 platys, and their tankmates are 3 zebra danios and 3 penguin tetras. I am wondering if the swimming activities of the danios are keeping the platys hidden in the plants, or do they just like to be in cover most of the time anyway. Any tips would be aprpeciated.

Also, I have only had them for about a week. maybe it just takes some time for them to come out of their shells?

hi
i would think it's just because they're new, they'll get used to the routines of the tank
in no time, next you'll have fry if not already.

thanks for the reply. already, since my initial post, they are coming out a little more often. especially when it is feeding time. i really like their colors, and want to see more of them!

I have Mickey Mouse Platys and Black Mollies and the Platys are a lot more shy than the mollies.

sounds like a nice combo,if i go back to community i think they will be on my list.

They will become more active. Just give them a little time.

@ willow, thanks i've really enjoyed their bright colors contrasting with the plants and sand. i'm considering getting more
@ TheresaMcMurrough: it has been a couple of weeks and they are still pretty shy. they spend most of their time in the plants and sometimes don't come out to eat every time. I guess i'm used to their tetra tankmates that swim to the top as soon as i get in from of the tank to feed them. i wonder if i get more if they would come out more?
