Cycling 55 Gallon Tank - What can live with a Red Tailed Shark?
I am a novice at this hobby. Up until now we've just kept twin barred platies and julli corys in a 20 Gallon tank. We just bought a 55 gallon tank that we are cycling.
I would really like to try a red tailed shark, but what fish can get along with the RTS and will fit in a 55 gallon tank?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Theres a couple suggestions in the highlighted profile Red Tailed Shark. You can just click on it to see some information.
What are some of the larger barbs? Do I have room for some Red Tailed Tinfoil Barbs? (The ones that grow to a max 20 cm, 8") Not to be confused with Tinfoil Barbs, which grow up to 14".
I understand they need to be in groups of 5 or more. Can a 55 gallon tank house five 8" fish + the RTS?
Seems like a lot of fish. Are there slightly smaller barbs (I know there are a lot smaller barbs), or barbs that don't require groups of 5?
I'm wondering if I can keep the RTS, 2 Opaline Gouramis, and 5 Rosy Barbs together in the 55 gallon tank?
First, welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.:-D
Responding to your questions...a 55g is insufficient space for the Red Tailed Tinfoil Barb, as noted in the profile [I believe you are aware of our profiles, second tab fro the left in the blue bar at the top of the page; if the name used in the profile, scientific or common, is used exactly the same in a post it will shade].
Rosy barb in a group of 6 minimum or more preferably is OK. But notice the cooler temp this species needs, and the RTS is slightly warmer.
All barb are shoaling fish, meaning they need to be in a group for one or more of several reasons.
I would not mix gourami with the RTS due primarily to water flow issues, as noted in the respective profiles.
