Can cryptocornes go bare root?
I have/had a potted cryptocorne plant. I want to get it out of the pot its in because it's just really ugly. It's not doing so hot either and getting some yellow leaves which I just trimmed off. I have been rinsing as much of the dirt off the roots as possible but now I'm curious if this thing can even go bareroot or if I just gave it a death sentence. All I really have is marbles in the tank and a couple of other bareroot plants (they are doing good so far, grass and java fern I believe). If it CAN go bareroot can I trim some of these roots back as they are really rather long. Thanks in advance!
I would plant it in some form of substrate, which can be sand, fine gravel, or enriched (Flourite, ADA, soil, etc). Expect the exisiting leaves to melt, as you have disturbed the roots. Most crypts will melt when disturbed. Leave the roots alone (after replanting) and it should recover.
As for leaving the roots unplanted, I've never done this with a crypt nor have I read of anyone who has, but I would expect the plant to melt and perhaps die completely. These species all grow in iron-rich clays and sands, they are amphibious bog plants, and they develop extensive root systems--as you've noticed.
Java Fern is quite a different matter, as it should not be buried or the rhizome can rot. It grows best above the substrate, such as attached to wood or rock, or just on the surface of the substrate.
Yeah, after doing some research I learned about the melt. Which its going through right now. That's good to know about the Java fern. Perhaps when the crypt dies (which I'm sure will happen) I will replace it with a Java. Thank you so much for your time and advice!
