UV Light!

OK am getting closer to starting the 55G. Got the stand finished and set up today with the tank in place. No substrate, water etc yet. Am going to do away with the Aqua-tech 30-60 HOB filter and go with a canister filter system. I notice some are offered with a UV light bulb. Is this something that is really necessary? It supposedly kills algae? Also will 265 GPH be suffecient for the 55G? I'm thinking probably overkill if anything. Thanks guys!

It will kill free floating algae ("green water"). It will do nothing to all the other algae that is in the glass, decorations, plants, etc. They say it will kill organisms too (ie parasites), and it will, but that's a function of intensity and duration so I can't say if that's true or not.

Flow rate is probably fine, most fish don't like fast water anyways (takes more energy just to sit still).
