So i have a couple plants which are huge, one is a sword-type plant and it has grown to the top of the tank plus another foot. How can I cut/replant this one so it will start another plant?
The other is some kind of lilly, same question.
Also, is there anything I need to know before moving a plant from one tank to another? I moved one already and it is not doing well at all even tho I have CO2 and the proper nutrients in the tank.
It can be a problem without proper identification of the plants.
Does the lily look like Nymphaea stellata?
I will say probably it is. I will try to get a better pic tonight after I'm done watching lost .
Swords propagate with runners, once a daughter plant is visible snap it off and plant it seperately.
Lillies are trickier- if it is below the surface an dyou have a number of leaves that have a wide span accross the tank chances are the roots have grown a new bulb which can be split from the main plant, i say tricky as it is below the surface and you cannot see what is going on.
I cant remember the latin but the tiger lotus is slower to grow on than the lesser variety.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Andrew! I recently moved my lily from my 15gal to the 90gal. The roots were amazingly long! They were about 1 foot radius out from the plant. So I hope it will continue to grow now that I've replanted it. Its doing ok so far!
Lillies are great for aquariums they soak up so much phosphate!! typically the roots are as far reaching as the leaves that grow to the surface.
Dont be suprised if your plant enters a dorment phase, its quite common with bulb speccies.
I can't say I have done this but I have read and been told that you can cut the rhizome of a large sword in half and they will both grow. I never got the Red melon Sword I have to throw up a runner but if it does, all you need to do is let the nodules form 4-5 leaves and get roots from them. Clip them off and replant them.
The only thing I did with my sword was to trim off every leaf it had and cut all the roots off to slow it's growth. One plant I got before I knew how big it would get and I only have 10 gallon tanks.
