2nd HOB filter or powerhead for circulation?
I'm just getting my 55gal setup, I've got it running with one penguin 350 biowheel power filter. But I'd like to add some circulation/surface agitation to the tank. I really don't like the look of bubbles so I would prefer not to use air stones. I was wondering if a second penguin 350 filter would provide the added circulation I need? My other option would be a powerhead, probably something like the aquaclear 50.
Either should be fine. The advantage of the filter would be extra filtering and bacteria, advantage to the powerhead would be that you could move it around and aim it at specific areas in the tank that might be in a dead spot. Personally for pur circulation, I prefer the Koralia powerheads. Maxi-jets can also be configured to be circulate or be a powerhead.
I do think I'm getting some dead spots, so I will probably go with the powerhead. It will add some current near the surface but I think it will circulate water across the tank better.
You can also make a spray bar for the powerhead which could do a lot to get rid of dead spots. Add the filter attachment on the AC filters and you have an extra filter. You can use them on sponge filters too if your so inclined for a little extra filtration.
I like the spray bar idea, that would circulate the tank nicely without knocking the fish all over the place. The powerhead does have a flow adjustment on it but I find it does next to nothing. I actually have it pointed at the glass now to deflect some of the force a bit.
Thanks for the help ;-)
