Using rocks to soften water

If I boil water with aquarium salt and poured the water over rocks and let it set for awhile, the rocks will soak the salt water, will this help soften the water.

No, not likely. Rocks don't have properties to soften water. Get some malaysian drift wood. Peat moss will also soften water, but you will get tannins in the water - which some don't like.
