I dont hear much about these filters but they sound like just the thing I have been looking for because here in melbourne australia we are in a severe drought I mean the kind of drought when 100+ year old trees are dying and permanent lakes are drying up so we are on tight water restrictions and I keep discus!!!! I have a few questions:
Does it just lower nitrates or can it keep them at 0?
Can you go months without water changes?
what kind of maintenance/care involved with them?
is it available in australia?
and how much money am I looking at for a filter for a 55g tank including shipping?
Sorry it took me so long to reply.
The denitrator can and will keep nitrates at zero when used as directed. I had one customer who had 35 2-3" cichlids in a 55 gallon tank and it only kept his nitrates at 30-40 ppm but his tank was way overstocked.
I do go months without water changes. The water quality stays extremely high. The denitrator actually does remove a lot potentially harmful substances in the water and they are used in industry to clean water polluted by all kinds of chemicals. You should do a partial water change every few months though just to keep things in balance.
I believe this type of system is needed to solve the worldwide water crises. It can clean the human waste stream much more effectively than current methods. Unfortunately it is underutilized on every level.
You have to inject "nutrient" which is vodka or sugar water in them once a week and adjust the flow rate a few times a week. It only takes a few seconds to do this though.
I can ship to Australia but I believe it costs about $100 for shipping.
Well I am really considering getting one. How much Am I looking at for a denitrator for a 55g and shipping to Aus?
Shipping to Australia is $90. The Medium filter is $219. You should be able to just click the link on the website to order and the postage should automatically be $90.
The following is from the website:
"Shipping to HI, AK, APO addresses, US territories, Canada, and Puerto Rico is $40-$80. Shipping to most other countries is $80-$100 by Airmail. Note: additional import taxes may be levied and will need to be paid by the buyer. Aquaripure will insure the item but any item lost or damaged by shipping will only be replaced when compensation to Aquaripure is received. In countries outside of North America a pump will need to be purchased separately due to voltage differences. The pump must be rated 300-450 liters per hour with a maximum pumping height of 100-125 cm. Alternately, you can request the 120v pump and purchase a voltage regulator. E-mail Aquaripure with your mailing address and a phone number (necessary for customs forms) at the e-mail above and you will be given instructions to pay."
