Emperor tetra - good tankmate for cichlids?

Hello,

I would like to know, if anybody has experience with Emperor tetras as tankmates for dwarf-cichlids.
I know, that males are territorial. But do they swim near the upper or the lower area of the tank?

Thanks for helpful advises.

Greetings

Axel

I just set up a tank with emperor tetras and dwarf cichlids actually and everything has been going very smoothly so far. The tetras and cichlids are both young so I can't say for sure when they get older but they leave each other alone right now. The tetras stay in the upper 1/2 of the tank only going to the bottom once in a while mainly for food. They are feisty little guys though. I stick my arm in for routine maintenance and they bite me haha. There hasn't been a problem though between the two. My biggest problem is feeding since they're little pigs. You have to work hard at making sure food gets to the bottom for the cichlids. I've tried spot feeding with a turkey baster and sinking pellets and they go after everything. Their bellies are also so full looking afterwards.

I have experienced much the same.

I had real issues with the aggression of the males to all other fish in teh tank, but it was mainly the Rainbow Emperor males, as I had these and the regular Emperor together. They are prolific spawners, I was always seeing fry. I got rid of the original fish (gave them away) because I could not settle the males down (again, Rainbow Emperors). I now have about a dozen of what seem to be the regular Emperors, these were fry that appeared over the few weeks following my removal of the original fish. So far they are behaving themselves.
