are green spotted puffers brackish fish?
are they actually brackish? i read that on the article. if so then what salt do they use to make it brackish? food salt? if so then do they add 2 teaspoon per gallon? if i want to get one then can i just keep 1 in a ten gallon? please give me details.:thankyou:
Green spotted puffers get quite large, and need about 30 gallons per puffer. I'm sure people keep them in less, but probably not a good idea. Very messy eaters, and they need room. My LFS tried to sell me 2 for a 30 gallon, but doing more research, decided it's not a fish for me at this time.
They need brackish for sure and apparently do better if they go full marine as adults. You can use marine salt to create brackish water. With a salinity meter to can check your levels and slowly increase salinity as the fish matures. They are born in freshwater, and move to salt water as adults, from what I know.
I'm sure others with more information, will weigh in.
how long will they last in freshwater?
That I'm not sure of. As babies, probably for a few months, but you do need to go brackish in a short time. Sadly, these adorable little fish have been sold as "freshwater" (Walmart probably the worst offender) and they will die at some point, but I don't know how long they can go in freshwater. I wouldn't take one on, if you're not up for the upkeep and work to keep them healthy and happy. They also need to eat snails, krill, shrimp etc, to keep their "teeth" from getting to long. That is why they are messy eaters, and will need frequent water changes. A 10 gallon is out of the question for a full grown one.
ok thanks though guess im not getting it
