Thought I'd just throw out an update since I moved on Halloween.
Since the move we've lost
3 african dwarf frog (no clue why they died, I think one got sunburned of sorts it spent all day the previous day mixing in with the floating plants),
2 albino cory 2 pepper cory (some disease took a couple, didn't affect anything else but killed everything it did affect. Think one got squished into the gravel and cut open)
Convict cichlid (pretty sure it got electrocuted by a faulty heater.)
2 jewel cichlid (think they were attacked by territorial parents)
Pseudotropheus polit (got royally beat up, not sure what caused the aggresion.)
3 Khuli loache (Wife bought them against my opinions. Not surpringly they were dead in a month.)
On the other hand..
We have 30 Otopharynx lithobates fry about a month old
12 Kenyi fry a couple weeks old
2 Electric yellow fry a couple weeks old (after being in the tank with mother for over a week, she ate the other 10 or so.. not happy)
20 or so more Otopharynx lithobates) spit out just yesterday. Went to move mother from the main tank and when I put her in the birthing tank a bunch of fry came out of the net with her. Kept mother in the net while she spit out the rest and then put her right back into main tank.
Also bought a larger pleco to go with our larger cichlids. They beat up the one we tried to put in there before that was about 5". It's fine though we just put it back in the other tank.
We also sold one of our male electric yellow. Too many males.
PS The fish are spread out over 10 or so tanks btw, not all in one lol.
Wow, what a challenge moving all those fish and tanks. Geezz. I think that trip would have been a great reality segment - "My travels with fish"
Congrats on new fry. Surprising about the kuhli loaches passing. They are so easy to keep. I have 5 and I understand why your wife wanted them. Active and cute. I'd try again with those, but they do prefer to be in groups of 5 or more. Where did you move from-to? Do you like your new home?
Moved just a couple of blocks down the road. Went from 2 bedroom apartment to 3 bedroom townhouse. Much more room :)
Bleh just found another dead pepper cory. It's tail had been nipped at but they were all fine yesterday :x
With all those deaths, I thought you moved across the country. Is it possible your water conditions are bad? I can't remember if you posted about your water parameters, sorry. Perhaps his tail was bitten after he died? There are some conditions that make the tail look like it's shredded. Believe it's, fin/tail rot, which is a result of poor water.
What a drag. Feel for you!
The parameters aren't perfect but ammonia is below .25 nitrites are 0 nitrates are around 20, all are the same.
I was thinking it was likely his tail was eaten after he died as well. I'm wondering if because the albino and pepper cories are only half the size of most of the other cories in the tank if they just got bumped the wrong way in a feeding frenzy.
So, you do have some water condition problems, that could be the cause. You should have 0 ammonia. Are you over feeding? Are dead fish left in the tank too long before you get them out?
All fish are fed once at night (with the exception of the fry that get fed in the am and pm) fish are randomly checked on through out the day fish are never left dead for more than a day in the tank (given some have died through the night and may be in the tank for a few hours) with the eception of fish being killed by aggression during breeding this is the only tank I'm losing fish in.
