algae-eater and cichlids? Is there any kind of algae-eater that mbuna cichlids won't torture/kill? Maybe a pleco that is bigger than they are? Or would they still chase it? Becky |
Ive kept common plecos with big SA bruisers. Its a good idea to have another tank to let the plecos repair themselves in the event they need to. |
I thought mbuna were algae eaters? anyways, if your tank is big enough try a common pleco or an L001 or if you want a big nasty try a black shark Labeo chrysophekadion if the tank is not huge then I suggest a vampire pleco (L007) or any of the royal plecs (L27,L27a,L27b etc) |
I know people will shoot me for saying this, but Bigger CAEs (chinease algea eater) will work also, even the smaller ones are fast enough to get away from mbuna. when they get bigger the tables will turn though and they may harash the mbuna. |
i've had good luck with bristlenose plec's, but alot of compatibility depends on your fish's individual personality. |
I agree with jcarter, bristle nose plecs are your best option. Mbuna dont really notice them because they are so different as in different color, shape and feeding habits. |
I have a pretty big bristle nose pleco who I'm going to be putting in my new cichlid tank but I've read that the mbuma's are aggressive....no? I'm still decieding on what type of cichlids I'm going with an I really like the mbuma's but i'm scarred of them hurting Plecy. He's the whole reason for the bigger tank. I going from a 29 to a 55. |

With plecos, I'd keep them with rams, apistos, angelfish, discus, keyholes, severums, uarus and plenty other mild-mannered cichlids but not the mbunas. The yellow labs can be granted exception however as these happen to be one of the most mild-mannered of all mbunas. |
i kept a syno with my african cichllids , and they was not a problem, but i went to the lfs this weekend and i saw in many of the african cichlid tanks i saw some plecs with them(nt show what 1's). nt sure if that is any help. |
i got a common pleco a few days ago... last night drove out of town to take my boyfriend to his parents' for thanksgiving... drove back this morning and my oscars had killed the poor thing. and my oscars are babies! there were plenty of hiding spaces for the pleco. i guess i know my guys aren't to be trusted now! at least not with anyone but each other... |
