3 CFL's or 2 T8's over 40B?
Just wondering what everyone thought. I have two clip on fixtures and three bulbs that I could use and I can pick up a third clip on. I also have a 48" shop light that I can hack a foot off of and pick up a couple T8 bulbs. All bulbs would be 6500k. I want medium light, which would you recommend? I'd be out the same money either way. If you think CFL's, what wattage bulbs should I look at? Plants will be Java Fern, Java moss, and probably some crypts.
I'll say with T8 you'll want the bulbs to total 40watts ... That'll give you 1 watt per gallon which is suitable for the plants your considering. I'm not as certain on CFL's... Sorry.
I have 4 CFLs over a 36 gallon (23-26 watts each I think I remember) and I consider this to be medium lighting, 3 would probably work but if its easy enough I would use the tubes, you can always pull one out if you think you are getting too much light. But of course its easier to adjust the light with CFLs since you can put a few lower wattage ones in one side of the tank to create a different lighting environment right in the same tank.
Well, I ended up doing two T12's, 30w each. The tank is really dim to my eyes but the tank is getting 60 watts of light so I'd think regardless of what I am seeing, that should be enough. Even with practically no reflectors to speak of (I'll be painting the inside flat while at some point) I guess it's still enough. No CO2 and for the time being, no ferts. I may dose in the future, just once a week or so.
I am getting ready to do another tank, a 20L. That one is getting the CFL treatment for sure. Maybe 3 13w bulbs over that one.
I have 2 20w CFLs over my 20L and its just about perfect with regards to medium lighting since it isn't as deep, remember the higher you go on wattage with CFL's the more efficient watt to lumen you get.
