Sand messing up your filter?

Had a question for everyone.
Do you think sand can mess up your filter?
Does it only happen to certain kinds of filters or could it happen to any kind?

clean the sand and dont turn on your filter til after you put it in .the only risk would be grain in the filter and sand doesnt float so just wait til its all settled.do you know how to properly clean your sand?

Need more info what type of filter?
In any event, if you get sand into an impeller, it will certainly not be good for the mechanism.

Does it only happen to certain kinds of filters or could it happen to any kind? I'd say any type of filter that uses an impeller or moving parts that could come in contact with the sand. Something like a sponge filter driven by an airpump would be safe.
