Possible tank setup
I am thinkiing about getting either a 10 or fifteen gallon aquarium with 3-5 gold barbs, 4-5 danios (pearl or zebra), and 4-6 hillstream loaches. The smaller numbers are for the 10 gallon and the larger numbers are for the 15 gallon. Thanks guys.
I'd recommend as big a tank as you can afford and have space for, you won't regret it. I think your fish #'s for either a 10 or 15 gallon may be high for the tank size. With 10 fish and no loaches, you are near/at capacity (space-wise) for the fish. Those species are very active and like lots of swimming room!
I'm sure that Zebra Danio's need at least 6+ of them in a tank, I can't remember why, they just do.
A 10 or 15 gallon tank is far too small for Golden Barb; this fish attains 3 inches and needs a group of 8 or more in at least a 3-foot tank though a 4-foot is more realistic. An active swimmer.
Danio are also active fish and should have more space (tank length) for swimming; the 15g at 24 inches is better than a 10g but a 20g long (30 inches) would be best.
Hillstream Loach has specific water and filtration requirements, just so you know; many "tropicals" do not suit these. Check the profile.
