I'm going to have two 10 gallon planted tanks with cherry shrimp in one and dwarf crayfish in the other. Do either ever try to crawl out of the tank? On one I have a light with legs above the tank, do I need a piece of glass over the tank itself?
Both tanks will have filtration. Do I need to get some sort of netting to cover the filter intake tube so that the wee crustaceans are not sucked into the filter?
Shrimp and most crayfish arent exactly what I would call escape artists. I dont think a glass cover is needed for the tank. As for the intake tubes. If there isnt already a plastic filter screen in place that came with the filter youll have to purchase one at your local LFS
Yes, get a sponge pre-intake to keep the shrimp, especially babies, safe.
if you rather would like to be on the safe side, i'd buy a top for the 10g's like this one is what I have and about the cheapest solution Perfecto Glass Canopies, Aquarium Lighting Power | PetSolutions
For the filter with the shrimp in the tank, their little offspring that you can hardly see with your eyes get sucked up in the regular filters quick, i always use sponge filters that are powered via an air pump like this one Bio Foam Sponge Filters, Sponge Aquarium Filters | PetSolutions
Year ago I'd have completely agreed they won't escape...until I established a open tank with plants growing up tot he edge (and later on out of there) that also housed shrimp and I found them laying outside the tank one day. It is not pretty to see that. So generally they won't climb out, but with the right plants in there or driftwood, they will, so give it a thought :-)
I got the pre filters already, will go to the lfs and see about glass tops. I definitely want the little shrimps to be safe.
Had I known like 10 days ago I could have mailed plants AND top & filter back then....now they're sold and only the plants are coming your way :|
But also if there's a left over piece of plexi glass around the house/ workshop you can cut those to size and just lay on there.
