What is this stuff?
I have a canister filtration system that is just over a month old and there is all this greenish spotty gunk in the intake and outtake tubes as shown in the picture:
What is this stuff? Anything I need to concern myself with or somehow remove?
hm. weird. its definitely an algae of some sort.. i dont kno what tho exactly. u could bleach ur tubes tho and that would get rid of it. but remember a good rinsing after :)
Well, I don't see how to get the tubes off...they are really on there. I try and avoid using any cleaning chemicals in or around my tank. I just don't know if this is normal after so short a time, and if I need to clean it off....how I would remove the hoses?
Can anyone shed some light on what that stuff is? I am still stumped.
No clue, sorry :\
but to get the hoses off you can try getting a bucket of really hot water and use it to heat up the fittings where the hose attaches. then just twist the hoses slightly to try to free em up, they will come right off. on the canister filter side of the tubes there is just that little nut that holds the hoses on :)
it's algae build up,not really a problem,(jmo)
i had the same thing when i had a different set up,
i used to take the pipe work off,and take the pipes out
to the outside tap, turn it on full blast and wash it away,
or depending how long the pipes are,you can buy pipe cleaners
to help.my pipes are probably the same,it's just that i can't see
because they are black.
hope that helped a little.
Hey all, thanks for the tips. Someone else also told me it could be beneficial bacteria...but whatever it is isn't harmful and is usually found in cannister hoses. Just glad to know its not something I need to worry about. :)
Just an agael buildup. Most lfs's sell brushes to clean out such buildup. They are relatively cheap in price. If you get them, you may want to figure out a way to get the tubing off. It's a little easier to get them clean that way. If you can't get them off of the pump, you can tie a piece of coated wire to the bush and run the wire thru the tubing to pull the brush though.
I'm so glad it ain't just me! My pipes look just the same. I have wondered if it needs to be cleaned, but i'll just leave it and make sure that i don't let them clog up too much!
