Really quiet external filter?

My fluval u3 internal filter died after just over a months use
First off I will start with that, any ideas on getting it to start again? I played with the impellor and plugged it back in, it worked for about a second, I moved it to where it sits in the tank and it died again!
I really loved the u3, very simple design and it was a beast of a quiet filter!

Now I need to either fix it, or I will be buying an external, but which externals are quiet?

I have a marineland bio-wheel hang on back filter. I had to lubricate the impeller with Vaseline right after I got it but it's been silent ever since.
