Most of the the spiny eels stay under a foot long but some of the more popular ones have been seen over 3 feet so you have to be careful which one you get. They prefer a dim tank with a sand or fine gravel substrate. They will tend to dig up plants so I would stay away from any expensive plants. They will usually eat any fish that fit in their mouths. The water should be soft to medium hard and the pH neutral, the temperature 76F - 85F.
