Dark Sand, IS there any cheap?
I'm looking for black or dark colored sand. Especially the soft kind that won't hurt sensitive rooters.
Any ideas? The stuff I see is all a dollar a pound and I can get Eco Complete for that.
I just need inert sand.
None that I know of as most of the dark sand comes from lava field beaches ( I think anyways) so import cost always brings it up. Its not really dark but play sand looks really natural and its really cheap, if you don't mind going that way.
Black Petco sand is like $17 for 20 pounds. You can go someplace like Tractor Supply and get a 50 pound bag of blasting media and it's black and works perfectly fine.
Just make sure you actually see it to handle before you buy. The sharpness you mention is critical if there are substrate fish.
I have been told that one can get black pool filter sand, as well as the usual white. Never seen it myself, so no idea on its roughness.
I am very happy with playsand. It is lighter in appearance under water than it is dry, but with lots of wood, plants, minimal light it is not bad. The corys seem to like it.:-D And in appearance it does replicate the stream sands in Amazonia, so it is authentic from that perspective.
