My rummynose tetras heads aren't glowing that bright, what's wrong?
I have four rummynose tetras (at least that's what they were sold as) but their heads just aren't bright red. I have done several water tests and a water change, and the water was fine. They don't seem sick and like to school together. One of their heads is red and the others are just kind of pink. Are they a different species or what? I'd appriciate comments and ideas.
There are three very similar looking species; two are in our profiles with photos [click the shaded names]: Hemigrammus bleheri [the Brilliant rummynose], Hemigrammus rhodostomus [the original rummy, now very rarely seen] and Petitella georgiae, the False Rummynose. The latter is quite distinctive from the first when you look carefully. In our profile of the first, there is a photo showing the differences between the three species.
However, if all fish came from the same group in the store tank, it is unlikely the species are mixed. In which case, the intensity of the red can pale due to stress. Water parameters, water conditions, bright light, or not sufficient numbers can all cause stress. This species is not very adaptable to conditions that don't suit it. The profiles mention the needs, so I won't repeat all that. But if you have any questions after reading the profiles, ask away.
How long have you had them?
I'm not sure 4 is enough, they absolutely exsist to be together...
You might consider adding 3-4 more to see if that will ease some stress?
I agree if you have tested the water with a reliable test and everything is good then I would add a few more. If you do not have any floating plants I would also try that. Good luck with them they are very pretty fish when they are all colored up.
I've had them for about 2 weeks. I have the four of them, 6 cardinals, 6 corys, 2 fem. guppies, and 1 bristlenose pleco, so I'm only going to get 1 more, so it won't get too overcrowded.:fish:
