LFS advice to new fish keepers appauling, should I complain?

Argh, this makes me so so mad and I'd like your opinion on it as I'm sure it'll make you as mad as it makes me!

I was browsing the fish at the LFS where I bought my puffers and overheard a conversation between a customer and the sales assistant, with the assistant telling the customer he couldn't buy his aquarium and fish on the same day but to fill it with water and leave it to stand for 3 days then come back to stock it.

It makes me so mad as when I got my puffers from them I was woefully under prepared and it was only thanks to this forum that I got them through the cycling process into the beautiful fish they are now 18 months later. Yet they do know about the nitrogen cycle as they talked me through it in the shop when I went back with a water sample as the fish were gasping at the surface 4 days after I got them.

Should I complain to head office or is that just fruitless?

I wouldn't complain about it but maybe say something. Maybe that person just doesn't know and they need to be educated. You didn't know at one point either. I think if the salesman meant harm he would've told the person to buy everything at once to make the sale. Unless you know that this specific person is aware of the cycling process and purposely spreading wrong information it's nothing to be upset about.

 He does know as he is the one who explained the nitrogen cycle to me when I was having problems at the beginning, when they allowed me to put pufferfish in a 3 day old uncycled tank. He , in my opinion, is purposely giving wrong information. They are a big company with several stores, and don't seem to care about the welfare of the fish just about making money. They must be totally aware that they are sending fish to homes to face certain death. It makes me angry because it is so unnessecary, even if they just gave out a leaflet explaining the nitrogen cycle and what to expect it would help.

If that's the case then yes I agree. Maybe suggest a leaflet but I'd go to the manager of the store and possibly the CEO of the company. While nothing may not happen atleast you would have done something. Atleast say to them something like I will not recommend this store to anyone I talk too and send them too another store.

Does you city have Chlorimine in the water instead of chlorine? letting water sit for three days, won't most chlorine evaporate? Heck if you have well water, you could put your fish in immediately...with the products no available for tanks a fish in cycle is very very safe and really makes fishless cycling pointless

But i don't know if the guy was buying Prime or similar products that detoxify ammonia and nitrites

It might be best to speak privately with the employee first. If he is willing to learn, fine; if not, then consider going higher up.
