Re: stocking question
The only bottom dwellers that will fit your tank are small species of corydoras. Corydoras habrosus is a fine example.
I understood the post, and I must say, the first thing I will have to suggest is getting a larger tank ready. If you're planning to keep and raise platy fry, a 10 gallon tank is way too small.
It's good the pleco will be moved soon, as it too will quickly be too large for a 10 gallon. Considering the size that platys will grow to, and the number of fry they can have at a time (30+ fry at a time, every 30 days), I wouldn't consider adding more fish to such a small tank. Keep in mind that if they can, the other fish will eat the fry. The more fish in the tank, the more chances no fry will ever survive. Each time fry are born there will be a shift in water quality due to the sudden increase in waste levels, so very frequent water changes (20 - 30% once or twice/wk) are also going to be needed. When feeding your fish, be sure they can completely finish the food within 1 - 2 minutes, no food should be hitting the bottom. If you see food on the bottom, do a gravel vac and get it out of there as soon as possible to prevent it from polluting the water and harming the fish. Then, next time you feed, give them a lot less. If you wish to keep fry, you will also need a lot of decorations for the fry to hide in to get away from the adult fish. There are a lot of plastic plants available for breeding. If/when you see small fry in the tank, crumble a small bit of the flake food when feeding, and increase water changes to every other day, about 10 - 20%. (careful not to suck up the fry... using airline tubing to do the water changes will help give you more control)
I hope this helps, if you need more, let us know. Good Luck!
