Betta Dying of Age
Hi, I've never actually been to this site before and I might not come again, but I just felt like I had to do something. I've been keeping Bettas for pretty close to ten years now, and they usually die at some point in the night with very little warning except maybe being lethargic or not eating well. Generally, they go peacefully, like most creatures do when they die of old age.
However, my male Betta BlueStreak, who I've had for a little over three years seems to be having trouble.
I noticed him having difficulty last night, but figured it was because he was getting old. He's been slowing down lately, as they do when they get old.
But he's still alive and seems to be very scared and upset. It's hard to explain my relationship with Bluey, but he's very special to me and I don't want him to suffer so much.
I do not want to euthanize him, but I was wondering if there was anything I could possibly do to make it easier for him. I guess somewhere in my mind I'm wondering if he may be sick and not dying.
And yes, he's in clean water, with a filter and it's a good-sized tank (4-5 gallon, can't remember exactly). The thermometer says his water is a good temperature for him and he does have a 'rock' he can rest on so he doesn't have to swim all the way from the bottom of the tank to get air.
I don't know what else to do but stay with him, since that seems to calm him down.
I can tell you how to humanely euthanize him, but I don't know how else to help. I just wanted to tell you that you have a beautiful heart.
If he seems comfortable, and you have been keeping betta for a while, so I'm sure you would know, then just keep doing what you've always done for your fish. Sometimes the only thing that you can do is be there.
