I am ready to make any changes necessary.
First off, you are not changing enough water often enough. Secondly, you need a test kit (ammonia-nitrite-nitrate) so you know what your water parameters are. My guess is that your nitrates are pretty high with Pangasius in the tank. Those are pretty big fish--or certainly can be!!! 2.5 feet long or better! They are a food fish in Vietnam. I am sure that they are cranking out a ton of waste material and with your water changes, your nitrate levels are causing the dropsy. Dropsy is usually a bacterial infection that can be brought on by poor water quality, which you most likely have right now in your tank. Gouramis are very sensitive to water conditions that are not pristine. Adding evaporated water doesn't count. Unless you have a planted tank, you should also be vacuuming the gravel when you do a change.....each week. Don't vacuum the whole thing each time, but do a good size portion one week and then another area the next. You need to be doing at least a 25% water change each week also........more would be better, but start out with 25% initially right now since the fish would be shocked initially with such a sudden change in their water conditions. I would wait a few days and do another 25% water change. Next week start doing at least 25% water changes from that point forward. I personally do 50% water changes every week. Dropsy can be treated if you catch it right away. (Do some internet searches on treatment), but usually once the pine-coning starts, the fish is beyond recovery.
Everyone makes mistakes, so don't beat yourself up too much. I would get a test kit immediately and USE it. Ammonia and nitrite levels always need to be ZERO. Nitrate levels should be under 40 ppm. With my planted tanks, my nitrate levels are usually around 10 ppm.
I hope this helps.......
I had done quite some reading but had absolutely no idea about the threat posed by Pangasius, I will be getting the testing kit right away and take actions.
Thanks a lot for your help, will let you know how this went.
Good luck and post how things go for you. This is a great hobby and you never, ever stop learning!!
