are my tank fish compatible?
I bought a tank and am planning to fill it with 12 zebra danios (danio rerio) , 1 bushnose catfish ( Ancistrus sp.), 2 kribs (Pelviachromis pulcher, one male and one female), and a group of platys or swordtails. I am more on the side of swordtails, but they grow probably too big, so I'll just have to get platys. I was also thinking instead of the platys I could put a few gouramis instead, but I'm not sure of their space requirements. Could any one tell me if this setup is a good idea, and if not, what I should add or remove?

What size tank do you have?

It would be good if you could provide some information about your tank. This makes a HUGE difference for a couple reasons. 1) Certain fish need tanks of a certain size. Some of them will grow very large (but start out small), but some of them need large tanks because they are active swimmers and need the extra space. 2) Some fish can be compatible with enough space, but put them in smaller tanks and they'll be aggressive. 3) pH can have an affect on which fish will thrive in your tank.

See how in your post Zebra Danio is highlighted in purple? If you click there, it will take you to a profile of that species. Look up the other names and you can learn about space requirements and temperament.

I would not select gourami; all gourami species are sedate fish, and the high swimming activity of danio would not be welcome. Also, in terms of the environment, gourami are best in fairly well-planted tanks, since they are not swimmers but more cruisers, browsing among plants, dangling roots, branches, etc. Danio by contrast like to swim in streams and need open space.

Swordtail or platy [these are best not combined in the same tank] are OK with the danio in a 29g. You probably understand about keeping more females to a male with livebearers, and that consecutive batches of fry will appear unless you just have males. Just be careful not to overpopulate the tank; 12 danio is quite a number for a 29g., I would suggest 8 to be better.
