How to grow Algae?
Ok you pros out there, I have a 10 gallon aquarium with two shortfin mollies and now a new veiltail betta and two new ghost shrimp (one is pregnant). I want to grow some green algae so that my mollies have some and so that the tank looks better (im my opinion when i see algae in a tank it looks cool). I have an extra tank 5 gallon and i want to know how to grow it because i have tried it before and never worked can someone help?
-should i get rocks to grow it on
-how long will it take
-anything else i would need to know
i grew some in a jar with rocks for it to grow on,and i left it on the windowsill
for plenty of light and warmth, took a while can't remember that far back sorry.
should i close the top of the jar?
Why don't you just feed them algea wafers?
Increasing the light also will result in algae. The danger with this is that various types of algae can occur, and fish will not eat just any old algae. The common green algae is what you really want. I had to do this to provide initial food (new algae) for my Farlowella fry, so the 10g tank was in the window with the blinds open.
The type of algae that occur in each fish tank is dependant upon the tank's biology, and this relationship is not fully understood. Among my 7 tanks which all have identical water, plants and fish loads I see different algae in different tanks.
yes i left the lid off, just toped up when needed.
Ok just needed to know if I had to leave the jar open.
Try a tiny bit of miracle grow (plant food) or fish food, and start (and top off) with aquarium water.
yeah I used a cup and put it outside and did use water from my tank. thanks
