Where to purchase a stand for my tank?
I purchased a 40g breeder from Petco, utilizing the 1$/gallon sale. I have a 30g high that I purchased on craigslist for 30 dollars. It's an old turtle tank - it holds water, but it's far too scratched from the turtles to make as a nice showcase tank. So it's going to get some water-safe GE2 silicon and with some ballasts become my sump.
I need to purchase a nice stand for my 40g tank (regular breeder dimensions I believe are 36 x 18 x 16). Where do you guys get your stands? Aside from going to a fish store and purchasing one of their ready-made stands which run upwards of 200 dollars, or going to walmart and purchasing a stand that is 'safe' for 55g but probably shouldn't be trusted with a 20g on it, what do you do? Is there a good site online that offers competitive stand prices with shipping that's not ridiculous?
Am I forced to DIY?
My tank stand is a bedroom night stand it holds my 36 gal bow front.
Yea, $200 is a bit steep. You might want to 'think outside the box' (not that yer in a box, I just wanted to write that!) and look at other used or unfinished furniture that's not necessarily made for the aquarium market. (remember to write down the dimensions you need as sometimes looks are deceiving) and remember you want a height of three feet or so and strong enough to support the weight of almost 10#'s per gallon.
A while back, I was thinking about setting up my 29g (got the 60g instead) and have an unused TV stand in the garage that would work great, just needs to have the swivel base removed and be reinforced slightly.
On the 'down low' DIY, a few 2x4's and some plywood makes an inexpensive stand. Even cement blocks and a plywood top works unless you want/need fine furniture.
I picked up a 40b the begining of this past summer when petco had the $1 sale, I found it impossible to find a stand that fits 40b thats not expensive. So $60 later at home depot I built my own. 40B has to be one of the most neglected sizes when it comes to stands plenty of cheap 29 and 55g ones but nothing in between.
Thats because of what the name says.... both 30 and 40 gallon breeder tanks are just that. They are breeding tanks. That is why they are wider then they are tall, where as a non-breeder would be taller then it is wide. Most breeder tanks end up in low cost rack systems, thus there is not much of a demand for nice looking stands for these sizes of tank. Most who are looking for a show tank pick the taller tanks because they display better, where as breeders want the larger footprint.

I bought a 55 gallon stand for a 29 gallon aquarium because I wanted extra room around the tank.
I ordered part #CD26677. Cost was $120.00 with free shipping.
This stand is absolutety awesome. It is constucted with some kind of heavy duty particle board. When the box arrived I could barely carry it upstairs it was so heavy. It looks great and is made to withstand getting wet.
One of the best purchases I ever made.
Garage sales and thrift stores work nice for heavy duty tables that can work as stands. Craigslist too.
I have my 15g on my kitchen counter, and my 29g on a stand I got at Walmart made for a 29g (it works, I just dont trust to lean on it, or put any added weight on it). Also, if you have a local aquarium store, as I do, they often sell used tanks and stands at great prices.
I would find a used stand or build your own. IMO premade stands will be way overpriced if you get them new. I also have never found a premade stand I am satisfied with. The used one for my 20 I got for $20 and is a nice wooden cabinet stand. I still ended up putting my own shelves in it and its also made of that heavy duty particle board which IMO is cheap construction. It holds the tank, but doesn't have any actually vertical support beams in it.
I found a solid wood buffet on craigslist for $20, it is about 1ft longer on each end and 6-8 inches wider than the tank itself. It is solid wood and holds my 55g tank perfectly. It also takes about 3 people to carry it....at least. Oh, and I found a stamp on the back of a company indicating it was made by some prisoners in a prison wood shop. =)
