I'm trying to cycle a 30 gallon tank for 3 fantail goldfish and I was wondering if I could get away with just an undergravel filter? I don't have a lot of money so I'm hoping i dont HAVE to buy a canister filter but I will if i need it.

I have never used an UG filter, but I have heard they are not all that effective at filtering and are out dated. You can use a sponge filter which works really well and is really cheap. I got mine for $16 from Dr. Foster and Smith. The filter was 6.99 and the air pump was 8.99.

The UGF will work fine for you AS LONG AS you routinely use a gravel siphon to keep the gravel clean.
When you have extra cash, you can think about another filter.

A few years ago, I usead the tank for cichlids (its now empty) but they survived for years with just a UG filter and the tank was never too dirty, but I did vacuum the gravel once a week so hopefully ill be able to do the same thing again. Thanks :)
