a friend of mine from a lfs gave me 6 of them for a dollar a piece so i couldnt refuse the deal. but anyways anyone who had them could you give me any kind of information about them. any kind of info will be useful i will be looking things up also so thanks
you've probably seen this info already...................
however just incase :)
min tank size 20 gllns the temp set at 72-79,higher for breeding.
ph 5.0-7.0,KH 5-12.
they are a peacefull cichlid, and can be kept in
a comunity tank with corydoras, tetras, small plecs.
Peat helps to soften the water.
they are an egg layer, around 200 eggs,
tank heavily planted with open area for swimming,
The female is smaller and has a pink belly,
also provide a flower pot for spawning, flat rocks,or
they may decide to dig a pit,in the substrate.
good luck. :D
The word peaceful is a relative term. GBR's can be as pugnacious and territorial as any cichlid when breeding time comes around. A well planted tank with plenty of hiding places is best for these fish. I keep a few GBR's in a SA cichlid community tank with keyholes, and a few apistogrammas. The tank is heavilyy planted with Amazon swords, Crypt. wendtii, dwarf sags, and pygmy chain swords with split clay pots to simulate caves. There are cories to clean up any uneaten food. All are doing very well together.
The ph in the tank is around 6.8 and the temp is kept at 82F. The substrate is Eco-Complete for planted aquariums. Filtration is via an undergravel filter plate with (2) Marineland 660r reverse flow power heads, a Marineland Emperor 400, and (2) Fluval 3+ internal power filters.
is there a easy way to tell males from females?
Males are much more colorful. Be aware that a truly mated pair of breeders will not tolerate any other of the species in close proximity of them. If you are keeping more that one pair, make sure there is enough room for all parties.
they like to hangout in parties of 3 lol or alone sometimes tho there will be just a single by themslef. tho i do have 1 male who just stays by himslef. hes very colorful :D
Females should have pink bellies and the first few ray extensions should be longer in the males.
