the good the bad and the ugly....
My platy has given birth!! I have 24 little guys in a breeding trap that were born yesterday! As a new hobbyist I feel like I have seen it all. My tank has been running for a little over a month and I feel a little crazy. I bought my platy pregnant, I did not intend for this as I have no experience and the worst part is that I am also having an ick outbreak!
Is copper safe by Mardel safe to use with the little guys? I plan to start another tank ASAP to transfer the little guys but it's gonna take at least a week or so until I get there. What should the babies eat? How long can I keep them in the trap in the community tank? Should I try and fight the ick with a salt/high temp combo for the time being? What does one do with 24 wag tail platys?
The babies should be okay foodwise for the first couple of days (with what's in their stomachs sustaining them).
After that some finely crushed up tetra flake should be fine.
Keep them in the trap until you can rehouse them safely into another tank to grow them on, or safely release them into your own tank (about 2 months). NB, they tend to grow faster when among larger fish.
Sorry I can't advise re: ich outbreak. Livebearers tend to have three or four pregnancies from one fertilisation, so if things do go belly up (as it were) you should get another opportunity.
