New 29 gallon (pics) and stocking question
Just wanted to share my newly set up 29 gallon. (excuse the bubbles and cloudiness, just filled it last night, sand kicked up a bit) It was a used tank, but am happy with the results. Plan on getting real plants after it cycles, so just have fake silk ones in for now. (p.s. that is not real bamboo, they are fake as I know bamboo is not aquatic).I think I am going to do the shrimp cycling method. Does the shrimp method smell bad? The tank is in the dining room and I don't know how we would feel about icky smells coming from the tank while we are trying to eat!
For stocking I think my plan is: 1 dwarf gourami 5 kuhli loaches 6 cory cats (3 peppered and 3 panda) 7 harlequin rasboras. Should that be enough room for everyone? Thanks!
The tank looks good. I think it would look even better with live plants in it. You talk about waiting till you have it cycles to add them. You know they would help tremdously with the cycling process and as for the shrimp cycle. I have heard (never cycled with anything but live plants) that it does stink.
Get some live plants and plant them. As Boredomb said, plants do the cycling for you. I never "cycle" new tanks; plants and fish go in on day one.
How it works is that live plants need nitrogen, and they prefer it in the form ammonium. Fish and bacteria produce ammonia, the plants grab it and change it into ammonium and use it. Provided you have sufficient plants and very few fish, there will be no cycling issues.
One of us can explain more if necessary.
How nice your tank looks! And how fantastically adorable is the pic with the kid?!
Also, def go with plants, its win-win. Lotsa helpful people with lotsa know-how here.
Enjoy your wonderful tank, and the enjoy bonding with your kidlet over the aquarium!
I like it!
Thank you for your advice! I will get some live plants as soon as I can and put those in. I guess I read about cycling wrong and read that live plants messed with your readings. Thanks for setting me straight! :-) What plants would you suggest for a complete aquarium newbie? I don't have a green thumb at all, so I like easy to maintain/hard to kill plants! lol That is my 3 year old son, Luke, admiring the tank. He keeps asking where the fish are. I have a 10 gallon with 3 bettas (all divided of course) that he absolutely loves to watch. I have also already started glancing around craigslist for a 55 gallon for the living room so I can get some Angels or Discus, I think they are beautiful. I am finding this aquarium hobby to be VERY addicting. This site is awesome, I am already learning so much. Thanks again!
