- - Gourami food?
|jkastner19 ||09-20-2007 05:49 PM |
My 3 new gourami's don't seem to like or eat the flake food I am giving. The tetras eat it right up. The gourami's don't seem to go after it and get their share. They eat a few bits here and there but being larger fish I'd assume they would need more than the tetras do... should I feed them something else? how do I make sure they get enough food and the tetras don't steal it? :)

I had the same thing happen when I was starting out. I honestly don't know how to fix it. You can try getting a feeding ring and putting it near where the gouramis hang out. Then feed the tetras at the other end of the tank, and while they are going nuts over there, feed the gouramis in the feeding ring.
Im not a fish expert but i have 5 gouramis of my own 1 dwarf passing away. When i first intoduced my gouramis to thier tank and like most fish they will be shy and not eat esspecially since thier are other "foriegn" like fish in the tank. As long as they are eating a few scraps you shouldnt have a big worry. As soon as they get into thier settings they will go after the food quicker. One treat my gouramis love are frozen blood worms, they should only be given as a treat since gouramis are vegetarian and somewhat omniverous. Too much bloodworms would upset thier digestive system.

Gouramis are largely herbivores in captivity, but I'd say all around they are omnivores. I know they love bloodworms, but you might also try ghost shrimp if you can find them. I've seen some that we have in the store go after some feeder guppies that I was feeding to the barracudas. They aren't very agile at all, so if you give them a live food, make sure it's slow and stupid.
