Marineland Emperor BIO-Wheel VS Penguin BIO-Wheel
After being away from the aquarium hobby for ~12 years, the kids have talked me into starting another one. This one will be a basic freshwater community tank. I'm not sure what I'm going to put in it but I want to get started on the cycling process. The tank itself is a 45 gallon. I'm planning on using a power filter as I had good results with them in the past. However, I can't remember which brand I used and now see two that semi look familiar. Are there any major differences between the two I have listed in the subject? Anyone have a preference of one over the other one?
i was just today looking at the penguin 350 and emperor 400 at petco. First, i think i would shop around, because the prices vary GREATLY on these filters from shop to shop to online retailer. find an LFS that makes you happy or grab em online :)
as for the two themselves the only real difference i could tell was overall build quality. the emperor just seems a little more... "sturdy" i guess you could say, but when i say a little more i mean a LITTLE more. i didnt see anything with the emperor that would get me to spend the few extra bucks over the penguin, and ive talked to alot of people that swear by the penguins. I, myself, will be getting a penguin for my next filter. I might even get two penguin 350s for my 110 gallon tank.
Get the Emperor. It uses spraybars to hit the biowheels so they spin better and don't get stuck as easily. Also they come with cartridges you can fill up with your choice of media, which allows you to avoid the damned expensive packed with unnecessary carbon cartridges they sell. Of course, a Penguin is better than nothing, so if the price differential is huge, go there, but all else being equal, the Emperor is by far the better filter.
That's my 2 cents. Your mileage may vary.
