What can be considered the best filter today for tanks less than 55 gals?:-)

There will be a lot of different filters mentioned by members, most of which will likely be good for their purpose, but not all fish need the same level of filtration. Telling us what fish you intend to house in the tank, and if plants are intended or not, will help narrow it down.

I would go with a sponge filter. Either a simple sponge like the Elite dual sponge connected to an air pump, or one of the Fluval internal filters that is basically a sponge with a small motor head.

I have the latter on my 33g (though it is an old Eheim model that is sadly not made any longer) and on my 29g I have the Elite dual sponge connected to an air pump which also runs an Elite sponge filter in my 20g (dual) and 10g (single).
