I couldn't find "general" section, so if this should be moved, please feel free...
I read on here that most people name their fish; most people, in fact, name EVERYTHING.
On a psychological level, will I really have a more affective relationship with my fish (cats, car, et. cetera) if I name them? Are there other people out there who do not name their pets and possessions? This isn't just a fish thing with me, but rather the idea of naming and "I call myself..."
Are there other people who think it's fine to have a car called Toyota, a cat called the grey cat, and a fish called blue female gourami (or whatever brands/breeds/colors/sexes you buy)?
Yea probably should be in off topic, but I had a cat, I called it cat and occasionally stupid cat. To me it only makes sense to name something that comes when you call it like dogs, but the rest cats, fish, car, rock, etc don't come when you call them anyways so theres not much of a point in my opinion besides the psychological needs for people.
I grew out of that phase, I used to but now I know all the latin names, so for guppies I'll call them P. reticula or kris pelvicachromis puncher and so on
It's nice/good to hear other people have some similar mentalities.
Everyone else around me is big into naming animals, friends, inanimate objects, et cetera.
I recently upgraded my tank and bought new fish. When I offered my partner the chance to join me and select a fish (but not allowed to name the fish) the general response was "Why would I do that if I don't get to name the thing?! Naming is half the fun." It just got to me a bit, or a lot, since I absolutely do not have the same mentality toward names and the "fun" part of care for other creatures.
I only name the bettas. All males and the names all begin with the letter B. Not sure how it got to be that way but I'm sticking to it now :)
i only name certain fish, usually plecos. if there is only going to be one of that kind and thus it will be easy to identify, i like to name them. i don't name my swordtails or tiger barbs, because it will be too hard to name them. and eventually i'll have too many swordtails to keep track of.
I only name the fish that stand out from the others. I don't do it to make myself feel more affectionate to them though... I just do it because I think it's funny.
And for zof, who included cats as a pet that doesn't come when you call it... Mine does! I have also trained him to sit and shake a paw. It is possible to train a cat; you just have to figure out what the cat views as a reward, and have lots of patience!
I often wondered this as well. My dog and cat have names, they come to them. My rats have names, they come to them as well. My dragon is named Monster, cause well, she is one. Of the fish, the Bettas have names, the pleco is Mrs Pleco and the gourami is Ryu. My son wanted to name him. But as for the tropical fish, my car, my bed or the bathroom door? They remain nameless.
Loved that fish tho.!
 Love the name Romad
I don't name my fish. My cat is named but he does act more like a dog than a cat, will meet me at the door when I come home and follows me around everywhere. I have never been into naming cars, just never seen the point in it, may some times refer to it as the tank, or that piece of (you fill in the rest) when it goes through its spree of numerous and usually expensive things breaking down on it.
