55 gallon brainstorming-first tank

I found a great deal on craigslist for a 55 gallon and stand so I'm putting my 10 gallon project on hold for now. 8-) Any way I would like to have a South American species community tank, I'm thinking angelfish, corys and as many amazon specific plants as I can reasonably grow in it.

Now here's the fun part: that should leave me a bit of "real estate" to work with, what fish would be recommended for this project? And what plants, for that matter?
