How to breed Discus
So to all those who have watched my experience of breeding angelfish and watched month by month as they grew I am happy to let you all know my gorgeous blue cobalt discus are about to spawn alot of shimmering , an pecking at there pot been feeding them blood worms alot this will be my first time ever raising there fry so it will be an experience for the both of us I'll be posting a few vids if interested.:-P
so if anyone has any experience breeding these fish please give me all the information you can it will be very helpful
Look forward to following how this new adventure goes for you :-D
I've been away for awhile. Remind me what size tank, any other fish with your pair, etc.
The blue pair are in a 30 gallon tank alone, and I also have 2 others that have paired up in my 75 gallon tank 1's a red virgin with the blue halo n her hubby is a yellow/orange pb there nipping at the magnet atm like crazy an then i got my 2 orange pb that paired up but are not showing as must of this behavior as the others is this like a seasonal thing? they are doing it together being the blues and the red viring n pb so I'll have 2 pairs spawning around the same time.
Well I got some great news! I got eggs :D!!
my red virgin and my yellow pb spawned on the magnet on the same side of the tank my angels did when they first spawned. Here's some pics n vid , how often will my discus spawn I want to move them into there own tank, I didnt even know they would spawn just happened yesterday they like paired up and started shimmering around then pecking at a spot n now eggs! :)
still not to sure about my blues there pecking at the pot every now an then but no spawning yet..
should I leave the light on all night long in my main tank so they can protect there eggs?
could really use some of your guys thoughts
Usually a pair goes through a couple of spawns before they "get it right" but with the other fish in there they have no chance. My pairs took about three to four spawns before they produced viable fry.
Do not leave the lights on all night, way to stressfull for all fish in the tank, especially your Discus. Discus parents have no problem guarding their eggs at night, it's the free swimming stage where they enounter problems.
Your blues, if they spawn, will have a better chance at raising any spawn they may lay, due to the fact that they are in their own tank. If you move the pair that are spawning in your community tank there is always the chance that the "bond" between the pair is broken. It can take awhile before they reestablish it. This happened to a friend of mine when he moved his Blue Scorpions to their own tank.
My discus pairs spawn every seven(!) days but sadly all free swimmers get gobbled up by the loaches during the day. After months of spawning both pairs are on hiatus. I'm told that this is common. They take a break in order to get "recharged". It's been two months since a spawn and I'm starting to wonder if they ever will again. After each water change the two pairs are poking at the magnet (favorite place to spawn) and also at the larger anubias leaves but no breeding tubes have come down.
well I plan to move them to there own tank so they can raise there fry without having all these other fish to worry about I'd love to watch them grow an nip off there parents its so cute!.
Sorry yours haven't spawned in awhile =[ hopefully they will soon there so pretty I remember watching yours an being like omg I want this an now I finally have it and am so happy =] I was thinking to move the fry once there wigglers to there own tank with the same tank water so it wont kill them any ideas on that?
The fry need to be kept with the parents for seven to ten days because they feed off of the slime coat of the parents. Leave them with the parents too long and it's detrimental to the parents. Pull the fry to soon and it's not good for the fry. You also need to start thinking about setting up a brine shrimp hatchery so you have food for the fry once you pull them. Fry need to be fed multiple times a day (five is recommended) so be prepared to do a ton of water changes!!
I AM READY!! i raised my angelfish an did all that bbs crap ! I'm ready for the challenge ! BRING IT ON! :D
