4 new mystery snails
Just added 4 of these guys to my smaller tank. This morning, 2 are floating at the top, tucked in their shells, one is fixed to the glass, one is tucked in its shell but down on the substrate. Are they ok? pH is above 7, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, have to check nitrates. Temp is lower 80's.
I think three are dead. The other is definitely not.
Give them time, a dead snail will not be closed tightly and it takes them time to acclimate. As for pH, the higher the better. 7.6 or higher is often recommended. Also, a GH of 6 or higher for best shell health is also needed.
Unless they are laying wide open out their shells they should be fine. Just watch them and you will know if they are dead, just take a whiff and it will be very obvious.
Ok. So I had taken them out and put them in a pitcher of water so I could tell if they would move at all. So far one of them came out so I put him back in the tank. He is floating around in the current as opposed to attaching himself to the substrate, walls, etc. Seems strange to me. The other two I haven't seen any movement yet. Should I just toss them back in the tank and wait for the stench?
As long as the doors are closed I would. When I got my batch I had quite a few that did that and I kept them until they either left their door open for too long or got a smell to them.
Ok, thanks. I'll give it some time.
So I've had these guys for a few weeks now and they all look dead but when I tap them (gently) they suck back into their shell. One has literally been in the same position ever since i dropped him in the tank. Any ideas?
Have you done any copper treatments in the past month or do you add any salt on water changes? I had some do that but they got over it after a few days. Usually if snails are not happy they will climb to the top of the tank.
If you have the resources, pull them out, put them in a smaller tank that's easy to clean, and drop some algae wafers and/or shrimp pellets in. See if you can 'bait them out' so to speak. If you can get them eating then they should be ok to put back after a week or so. It's worked for me....
Hope that helps,
